Western Canadian Artist Glen Collin – Painting Nostalgic Art and Historical Art

“The prairie landscape is a challenge to paint and interpret. Usually the focus is more about the Big Sky rather than the rolling wheat fields. My favorite time is in the evening just as the sun sets there is a raking light that washes across the landscape. Objects begin to glow in front of the dark shadows behind them.
Deer will become jewels of light for just a few minutes. I don’t attempt to paint at this moment rather just study it and remember for a later time. Old dogs, tractors, and trucks are on my list of favourite things to paint. I grew up near towering grain elevators, puffing steam Engines, train stations and old bridges. I can remember seeing a diesel engine for the first time. These things are nostalgic for me. I enjoy watching machinery at work. Vintage farm equipment during harvest or heavy equipment at the jobsite. It is interesting to see them and understand the mechanics of how they operate. Historical scenes are always fun to research and paint.”
